Outline of Genesis
Genesis Chapter 1 – God’s Work of Creation
God creates heaven and earth; This was Day 1
the light; (Was this God’s own light? He doesn’t create light until Day 4 – see Genesis vs. 14-19.)
the firmament; God called the firmament “Heaven”. This was Day 2
separates the dry land; This was Day 3
forms the sun, moon, and stars; This was Day 4
fishes and fowls; This was Day 5
cattle, wild beasts, and creeping things; This was Day 6
creates man in his own image, blesses him; When God mentions “Let us make man in our own image” perhaps He was referring to himself and other beings of Heaven such as the angels?)This was Day 6
grants the fruits of the earth for food. The bible also mentions of “their kind” which means those animals could only reproduce with their own kind. Also, plants, grains, fruits, etc. would have seeds, so they could be reproduced. This was Day 6.
Genesis Chapter 2 – Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden
The first Sabbath – with the Heavens and Earth and the hosts of them being created, God was now able to rest. God blessed and sanctified this day because this was the day He rested from creation. This was Day 7.
Further particulars concerning the manner of creation. – These are the generations of the Heavens and the Earth when they were created. God hadn’t caused rain to come on the Earth yet, so he sent a mist to water the whole face of the Earth. There was no one to till the Earth, so God formed man from dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul – (were those that were outside of the Garden of Eden something other than living souls? Could Adam have been different than other humans? Read further to find out what separated them.)
The planting of the garden of Eden, and its situation; God planted a garden eastward of Eden and there is where he put the man (Adam) that he had formed.
man is placed in it; and the tree of knowledge only forbidden – God put Adam in the Garden to dress it and keep it. In the Garden, God places every tree that was pleasant to the sight and good for food. He also planted the Tree of Life and The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the midst of the Garden. God told Adam he could eat of every tree except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, because if he ate of it, he would die. God placed a River in the Garden to water it. The river also went out of Eden and parted into 4 heads – 1. Pi’son (encompassing the whole land of Havilah (where there is gold and bdellium and onyx stone). 2. Gi’hon (encompasses Ethiopia). 3. Hid’dekel (flows toward East of Asyria). 4. Euphrates. (Notice that God didn’t prevent Adam from eating from the Tree of Life – this tree would have given Adam everlasting life. (This is what set Adam apart from other humans on Earth – He would have been immortal eating from the Tree of Life. He was given the Tree of Life to live forever. Nothing like that was outside of the Garden.)
The animals are named by Adam – God let Adam name all of the animals.
The making of woman, and the institution of marriage – God saw that it wasn’t good for Adam to be alone, so he tried to find Adam a “help meet” within one of the animals, but after searching – God didn’t find any that suited Him for Adam, so God caused a sleep to fall on Adam. God took one of Adam’s ribs and created Woman. God brought her to Adam. Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh, and she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man. Therefore, shall a man leave his father and his mother and cleave to his wife and they shall be one flesh.” And they were both naked and neither were ashamed.
Genesis Chapter 3 – The First Sin and Its Punishment
The serpent deceives Woman (Eve) – The serpent was subtle and crafty when deceiving the woman (Eve) to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. The serpent asked the woman why couldn’t she eat from all of the trees of the garden. The woman told the serpent that if they ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil that they would die. The serpent told the woman that they (she and Adam) wouldn’t die, but instead they would be as gods knowing good and evil. (Could the serpent be a metaphor for temptation?)
Both she and Adam transgress the divine command, and fall into sin and misery – the woman ate of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and she also gave it to Adam and he ate it as well. Their eyes were opened, and they saw that they were naked, so they made aprons from fig leaves to cover themselves.
God arraigns them – They heard God’s voice walking in the garden (one may wonder – how does God’s voice walk? Being in God’s divine presence in unlike any other experience. It is supernatural. It is unexplainable, so they were actually hearing his voice walk toward them). They hid from God, and God called to Adam asking where he was. Adam told God he’d been hiding because he was naked, and God asked Adam who told him he was naked. God proceeded to ask Adam had he eaten from the Tree that he was forbidden to eat from, and Adam told God that the woman had given it to him, and he did eat it. God asked the woman what she’d done, and the woman told God that the serpent had tricked her into eating the fruit of the forbidden Tree. (Did God not know what they had done? Of course, He knew. He wanted them to confess to Him – God always wants us to confess our sins. Confessing our sins to God keeps us from being separate from Him in that we are admitting to doing wrong and in admitting our wrongdoing, we should ask God for forgiveness).
The serpent is cursed – God told the serpent that he would be cursed and made to crawl on his belly, and eat dust for the rest of his life.
The promised seed – God said he’d put enmity between the woman and the serpent and between his seed and her seed, saying, “It shall bruise thy head and thou shalt bruise his heel.” (Could the woman have gotten pregnant by the serpent and Adam. Could the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil have taught the woman about sexual intercourse outside of marriage? Heteropaternal Superfecundation – where a woman can conceive twins from two different men if she ovulates twice within a short period of time).
The punishment of mankind – God told the woman he would greatly multiply sorrow and her conception and in sorrow she will bring forth children. She should desire her husband and he will rule over her. Adam named the woman “Eve” because she was the mother of all living. And unto Adam, God told him, since he had listened to Eve and ate of the fruit, that God would curse the ground and make thorns and thistles grow, making it hard to produce food from the earth. God also made Adam and Eve mortal, giving them a lifespan, as they would no longer have access to the Tree of Life. If God had allowed them to continue to eat from the tree, they would have been as gods themselves.
Their first clothing – God made Adam and Eve coats of skins to clothe them.
Their expulsion from paradise – God cast Adam and Eve from the Garden and placed Cherubims and a flaming sword (turning every way to keep them away from the Tree of Life.
Genesis Chapter 4 – The Two Brothers and The First Murder
The birth, occupation, and offering of Cain and Abel – Cain and Abel were born to Adam and Eve. Cain was a tiller of the groun, and Abel was a keeper of sheep.
Cain murders his brother Abel – Abel gives God his best of his flock as an offering. Cain doesn’t give his best to God, and God knew this, and brought it to Cain’s attention. This upset Cain, and when he was out in the field with Abel, Cain killed him.
The curse of Cain – God asked Cain where Abel was (Again, this is a question just like God asked Adam when he and Eve ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God already knows the answer. He wants Cain to confess, and ask for forgiveness). Cain says he doesn’t know and follows it with “Am I my brother’s keeper?” God asked Cain what he had done, because the voice of Abel’s blood was crying up from the ground. (Because God already knew). God cursed Cain, so that when he tilled the ground, it would not yield a harvest. He cast Cain onto the Earth as a fugitive and a vagabond. Cain was scared to be cast out as he was worried he would be killed by someone. God set a mark upon Cain, so that if anyone should find him, they wouldn’t kill him. Cain went from God and dwelled in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
Has a son called Enoch, and builds a city, which he calls after his name – Cain and his wife had a son – Enoch – Enoch had children and from that line came La’mech.
His descendants, with Lamech and his two wives – La’mech’s two wives were A’dah and Zil’lah. La’mech kills Cain. (It’s not talked about much here in the bible, but there is more information on La’mech murdering Cain in the Book of Jasher)

From then, God shortened man’s lifespan to 120 years. There were giants in the earth in those days, and also after that when the sons of God and the daughters of men had children, they also became might men of old, men of renown. God saw that the wickedness of man was great in those days and that every imagination of the thoughts of man’s heart was only continuous evil. It is interrupted by the confusion of tongues, and the builders dispersed – God came down to see the city which was being built. God knew that if the people spoke only one language, there may be no end to what they could do, so God confused the languages, so that the people wouldn’t understand each other. God then scattered them upon the face of all of the earth. The city was called Babel because God intentionally confused the language of the people.
