Bridges to Light

Illuminating Paths to God's Infinite Grace and Light

The Voice That Whispers First

Sometimes, when I’m reading Scripture, it hits me in a way I never expected. Recently, I was reading in the book of Matthew — where Jesus is led into the wilderness and tempted by the devil. And suddenly, I didn’t picture a literal figure standing there anymore. I realized… the battle was in His mind.

Just like ours.

And it made me think — all these years, even back to Eve in the garden, I imagined a talking snake whispering in her ear. But what if it wasn’t something standing next to her? What if it was something rising up inside her — that moment of doubt, that questioning of what God said, that little tug of “maybe…?”

That voice is the same one we all hear, even now.

When someone posts something online, and it stirs something in you. That itch to comment. To correct. To respond. It’s like a little flame flares up and wants to speak. And if you’re anything like me, sometimes that flame has felt like it had to be heard.

But God — oh, how gentle He is — will often send His Spirit, soft and quiet, to whisper: “Delete that.”
And you just know… He’s right.

We don’t need to step into every thought, every opinion, every argument. He doesn’t call us to charge into someone else’s mind. But if someone steps into ours — into our heart or life with uninvited weight — that’s when He gives us the strength to speak truth, kindness, peace. It’s not silence He’s after. It’s discernment. Wisdom. Balance.

Jesus, in the wilderness, didn’t yell. He didn’t argue. He spoke the Word.
And then He walked out in power.

So if you ever find yourself caught in that moment — finger hovering over the keyboard, mind racing with what you could say — pause. Listen. That little tug, that whisper of “let it go” — that might just be the Holy Spirit. He’s not trying to silence you. He’s protecting your peace. He’s helping you choose what’s better. And that kind of quiet strength? That’s where the real power is.
